The Kufa Cement Company, a member of the Southern Cement State Company in Najaf, approached the Najaf Small Business Development Center to assist them in engaging construction companies and other buyers of cement in Najaf on ways to inform local buyers and educating them on the benefits of purchasing cement locally versus importing product produced from outside of Iraq.

Attendees pose questions during a presentation by Southern Cement State Company executives at the Najaf Chamber of Commerce.

The Najaf SBDC, worked with Southern Cement to review international quality standards, and developed a marketing strategy that included seminars in various provinces and increased advertising. The Najaf SBDC identified leading members of the Najaf construction community and provided logistical support for a presentation by Southern Cement hosted by the Najaf Chamber of Commerce on Monday 27 August.

Nearly 200 attendees gathered at the Chamber’s offices and heard Dr. Sinan Alsaedee, General Manager of Southern Cement State Company and Eng. Mohammed A.B. Mahmoud, President of their Quality Assurance Department discuss their cement’s quality relative to American and British testing standards and advantages of purchasing locally. Members of Najaf’s Parliamentary delegation, Najaf Provincial Council, Chamber of Commerce, Investment Commission and builders attended the presentation, which was widely covered by local media.

The Najaf SBDC will publish advertising of Kufa Cement Company in their monthly Najaf Economic Gazette and 2013 Business Guide of leading companies in the Province.

“We worked with Kufa Cement staff to determine what technical points to present to the audience and what companies to invite. We contacted the largest builders in the Province and were very pleased to find nearly all attended. This is a good example of how we can work with local private and state owned companies to increase sales and employment in the province.” said Hassanein Muhiddin, Executive Director of the Najaf SBDC.
