UN Concerned over Delay in New Electoral Board
By John Lee.
The Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) for Iraq, Mr. Martin Kobler (pictured), has expressed his concern over the delay in selecting the new Board of Commissioners of the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC).
“Any further postponement in appointing the new Commissioners would pose a serious threat to the democratic process in Iraq,” Mr. Kobler warned. “It is vital that all decision-makers now come together to urgently complete the selection. This will pave the way for the governorate council elections to go ahead as scheduled in March 2013. This is in the interest of the people of Iraq.”
Mr. Kobler also repeated his call for the parties to ensure that women are represented in the new Board of Commissioners.
The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) has been committed to extending its support and advice to the selection of new Commissioners. The mission has been encouraging an inclusive approach throughout the process.
