Final Handover of Iraqi Judicial Development Institute

U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) William R. Brownfield met with Chief Justice Medhat Mahmoud of the Iraqi Higher Judicial Council (HJC) on May 28 to recognize the HJC’s assumption of full authority and responsibility for the Iraqi Judicial Development Institute (JDI).
The HJC and INL, through joint partnership, created the JDI in 2009 as a center for the continuing professional development of Iraqi judges and court personnel.
Today’s event also marked the delivery of 30 armored vehicles given by the United States for use by the Higher Judicial Council.
The successful collaboration of the HJC and INL has resulted in the JDI becoming a premier venue for personnel from various Iraqi ministries to receive advanced legal and staff trainings (sic).
Assistant Secretary Brownfield affirmed the long-standing commitment of INL to a strong partnership with the HJC for the continued professional development of the Iraqi judiciary.
