WEO Launches Women Empowerment Radio in Erbil

The Women Empowerment Organization (WEO) celebrated the official opening of Women Empowerment Radio in Erbil on November 2nd, 2011. Representatives from the Iraqi Ministries and Parliament and friends attended and expressed their best wishes and prayers to Ms. Suzan for WEO’s accomplishments by giving gifts and bouquets of flowers.

Ms. Suzan thanked those attending and promised to give useful broadcasts about health, politics and economic for all listeners, with a particular reference to women of the region. After the reception they conducted a live interview on the radio where Iraqi Deputy Minister of Culture Mr. Halgurd Jundiany congratulated Ms. Suzan and gave his best wishes and apologized that the Minster could not attend.  He also said that they would like to return in 2012 to celebrate the first year anniversary of the radio opening. The live broadcast was followed by a 45 minute interview with Mr. Ari Rafeeq, Director of the Directorate of Violence Against Women, who talked about issues of violence faced by women, specifically in Erbil and in the Kurdistan region.

The event generated a great deal of local media coverage, such as from the Peyamner News Agency (PNA) website and the Xendan Media Agency website as well.

At the end of the celebration, the staff and guests sat together and discussed upcoming radio programs for the next few months. Ms. Suzan mentioned that  women have been victimized all over the world and that all women are valuable and we should hold them in high regard and protect them and give them support to start a new life with peace and success.

The radio will broadcast on the frequency of “91.8”.  Upcoming programs will include:

  • Beyond the Borders: Women’s problems with the society and the government and the lack of necessary laws to solve these problems. Topics will include among other issues, violations of human rights and violence against women.
  • Documentaries Programs:  Discuss the general problems and the lack of the solution at national and local government departments…
  • The World Today: Discuss the general problem these days like education, healthcare, needs of the disabled and other groups.
  • Women and Religion: Discuss religious matters and questions related to women.
  • Woman Empowerment Organization Activities: review the women empowerment organization activities.
  • The 23 Day: monthly program following up with officials of the civil society organization and government departments.
